Society for the Protection of Insects Review

Disclaimer: This review was done at the request of an anonymous funder.

Society for the Protection of Insects (SPI) is a nonprofit founded in 2023 that seeks to protect insects. Unfortunately, there is very little publicly available information about SPI's work.

What Do We Know About SPI's Work?

SPI states that they reform pesticide use, protect endangered insects, and challenge insect factory farming.

However, there is no publicly available evidence of specific actions taken by SPI (besides insubstantial actions such as posting on instagram). When we click "Learn More" under the part where SPI states that they "Reform Pesticide Use," we are given an error message. We attempted to get more information about SPI's work, but SPI's founder said there wasn't any work we could include in this review.

SPI's statements reflect a concerning pattern we've seen from charities: identifying large, important problems and then making vague claims about fixing them—without providing evidence. This can lead to donors having inaccurate impressions of charities' work, and can also make it harder for evidence-based charities to compete.

Note: By "evidence-based charities" we mean charities that provide sufficient evidence to support their publicly available claims.

How Much Impact Do We Attribute to SPI?

Our default assumption is that a charity is not having any impact. From there, we assign credit based on evidence.

We found no evidence that SPI is having any meaningful impact. Accordingly, we do not attribute SPI credit for having any meaningful impact.

Conclusion

We do not recommend donating to charities when it is unclear what they do. Accordingly, we do not recommend donating to SPI.
